Domestic violence is an all-too-common problem throughout Massachusetts. You might never know who around you is suffering from some sort of domestic violence or abuse. Abuse isn’t just physical. It can also be emotional abuse, which is very difficult to spot. Here are some tips for spotting the signs of domestic violence so you know what to look for in family, friends and colleagues.

The most common sign of a relationship that could endure domestic violence is when control is a factor. For example, if one spouse tries to control who the other spouse talks to, goes out with or visits with, violence could find its way into the relationship.

Another sign of possible domestic violence is when one partner takes the other’s paycheck, doesn’t give money when it is requested, or forces the other partner to ask for money each time they need to buy something.

Threats are also common in relationships with domestic violence. These include threats to take children from the other person, threaten to harm the children, harm the other person or harm themselves.

When one partner or spouse in the relationship acts like any abuse, emotional or physical, is not a big deal; this is a warning sign of domestic violence. What also comes into play here is when the other person denies the abuse or even tries to blame the abuse on the victim.

Domestic violence charges don’t have to rule the rest of your life. You also don’t have to back down from fighting these charges. Learn about the laws, find out the exact charges levied against you, and put together a defense that can potentially keep you out of jail.
