Why mouthwash may affect a test
Many mouthwashes contain small amounts of alcohol. The quantity isn’t enough to impair someone, but it can stay in the mouth for several minutes. Breath tests read alcohol from deep lung air, but they also pick up “mouth alcohol.” When the device detects leftover alcohol in the mouth, it can show a number that doesn’t match the bloodstream and lead to an unfair result.
How long the effect lasts
Mouthwash only influences a DUI breath test for a short time. Studies show the effect usually disappears within 10 to 15 minutes as saliva clears the alcohol away. If someone takes the test right after rinsing, the machine may show a number much higher than reality. Timing often determines whether the result reflects actual alcohol levels in the body.
Other products that can trigger mouth alcohol
Mouthwash isn’t the only everyday item that can cause problems. Breath sprays, cough syrups, and some cold medications also contain alcohol. Certain foods, like fermented bread or very ripe fruit, leave trace amounts as well. Each of these can create mouth alcohol for a short period, which may lead to a false reading if testing happens too quickly after use.
